Nevertheless the tunnels underneath the inn are historic and whether Ye Old Trip to Jerusalem is the oldest inn in England doesn't really matter because it is one really old pub.

What is now the Rock Lounge within the pub today is a cave which dates back to the 12th-century, making it one of the oldest caves in Nottingham. It wasn't until 1799 when the name 'Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem' was first referenced. Prior to this, it's believed that the pub was known as 'The Pilgrim,' though this name is only attested.

The Caves and Legends. One of the most intriguing features of Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem is the network of caves that make up the pub. These ancient caverns, hewn into the sandstone rock, have served various purposes throughout the centuries, from a cockfighting pit and brewery storage to forming part of the Castle Gaol. They also lie beneath the pub and span the rear rooms.

It's a whitewashed building at the bottom of the rock that holds Nottingham Castle (photos 1 & 2). Its fame is partly due to its age and partly due to the cave rooms at the back that are cut into the rock (photos 3 & 4).
